DNA Chance or Design.mp3

We hear much about DNA : TV documentaries, criminal convictions, celebrities and the human genome project. Type in DNA on Google and see for yourself what comes up. But, what is DNA? Why is it important? Could it have formed by accident? These are the questions in this week’s ‘Food for thought’. Former DNA research scientist Dr Nigel Robinson looks at the DNA story the facts and the fables and comes to the conclusion that DNA not only reveals something about ourselves but something about our Creator.

So what is DNA?     DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms. It is what makes you, you and me, me. Nearly every cell in a person’s body has the same DNA. The information in DNA is stored as a code made up of four chemical bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T).

But what is a cell?    Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things. The human body is composed of many trillions of cells (e.g. in your brain alone there are over 20 trillion cells)

What is a gene?    Genes, which are made up of DNA, act as the instructions to make us. Every person has two copies of each gene, one inherited from each parent. Most genes are the same in all people, but a small number of genes are slightly different between people. These small differences contribute to each person’s unique physical features.

And what is the genome?    A genome is the complete set of DNA, including all of its genes. In you and in me, is a copy of our entire genome—more than 3 billion DNA base pairs—it this is contained in all of our trillions cells that have a nucleus.

Could all this have happened by Chance?

Uncaused and undirected - without a Designer?
