Throughout the last two or three decades, life in Britain has changed significantly. Some things have changed for the better, but there are also many worrying changes that have been taking place. We have seen an increase in violent crime and problems related to alcohol and drugs, personal debt has spiralled, and the teenage pregnancy rate is by far the highest of any European country.
What is the answer? There are people in positions of influence who are making sincere efforts to address some of the problems. But the troubles in our society are like a cancer that is so far advanced that it is beyond human help. It will need God Himself to step in and turn hearts and minds back to Him. There have been occasions in the past when He has done that, and raised up men who led a great spiritual revival. We must pray that He will do the same again.

There have been many other symptoms such as loss of community spirit, deteriorating behaviour in schools, and the widespread public use of foul language. For these reasons the description “Broken Britain” is justified.

How can we account for this? There is an underlying root cause, and a number of secondary reasons that explain why things have deteriorated so rapidly in the last decade or two. The root cause is that widespread acceptance of the theory of evolution has undermined belief in God, and in the Bible.

God sent Jesus who became the broken Son for that very purpose ““He was bruised for our iniquities.” (Isaiah 53:5). Getting right with God means being prepared to acknowledge our own sin, and to trust alone in what Christ did when He gave his own life to pay the penalty of sin on our behalf.

This has led to a general rejection of the ten commandments, the set of moral absolutes given by God. Secondary causes include family breakdown, television (which promotes immorality, and ridicules Christianity) and the internet (which provides ready access to pornography).
Britain is a broken nation because we have turned away from God – ““Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34).

The broken law of God is something of which we are all personally guilty. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23). We don’t know if God will intervene and turn the nation around, but our first priority must be to get right with God as individuals.
