| Although we didn't go
to church I started taking her to the mums and
tots group at Newsham Park Chapel. They explained to me how their
church held a thanksgiving service for babies, as they believed that
only adults should be baptised. This was exactly what we wanted and we
both began to go along to their family services once a month and had a
thanksgiving service there for Catherine. After our son Graham was born we moved to Dovecot in 1989 and it seemed sensible to start going to Dovecot Church, which was the church Billy had gone to as a child! We went every week as Catherine and Graham had joined the Sunday School. The preacher said that we were all sinners, and as God could not allow sin into heaven, nobody could go there unless our sins were dealt with. I used to think he was talking about other people, not me, as I felt that I was a nice person and had never committed a crime or anything bad. Gradually I began to realise that I was a sinner, as I had told lies, disobeyed my mum as a child and done lots of other similar things. I realised that no one on this earth, even the nicest person, can reach God's standard of purity and so cannot be allowed into heaven. Then I heard the good news. God had sent Jesus, his Son, to take the punishment I deserved, when he died on the cross. Anyone believing this, and putting all their faith in Jesus and not in themselves could be forgiven and accepted by God. One great day I prayed and asked God to forgive me for the wrong things I had done, and I asked Jesus to come into my life and change me. He did, and I have been a Christian since that day. I now have peace with God and the assurance that when I die I will go to heaven for eternity. Jesus helps me everyday to face life with all its joys and problems. My life has still been full of those but it has been made easier by having such a friend in my life as Jesus. I now run the toddler group at Dovecot so that other people can find out about Jesus as I did all those years ago. |
