Ticket to heaven ?

False Tickets

If you are holding a ticket like these, you may go to the airport and expect to get the plane, but you wouldn't be able to – the tickets are useless - the airlines have all gone bust. It is possible to have a false ticket.

It is possible to go through life and think you are covered for eternity, when in fact you are not.

Here are some false tickets to heaven that people are holding :-

"I'm good enough..."

Many people believe they are good enough to get to heaven.
Jesus told a story of a religious pharisee and a publican. The pharisee expected to get to heaven because he was better than the other publican. The publican knew he did not meet God's standards and asked forgiveness. Jesus said the pharisee had a false ticket, he thought he was good enough, but Jesus said he was not. When we think we are good we need to look at what God's standards are not compare ourselves with others.

How good do you think you are ?

When we look at God’s standard (perfection) and compare our lives, it is clear that though some may be better than others, all have fallen short.
Some people look at the worst of people and ask: 'if they were to ask for forgiveness of God could they go to heaven? The Bible makes it clear that what Jesus did was enough to save even the worst of sinners.

"I am a christian..."

Other people believe they are Christians, but it is possible to be deceived. Nicodemus was a very religious man, but Jesus said he needed to be born again. He knew about Christ, but being a Christian is about having
a personal relationship with Him. Ask yourself: has this happened to you? Have you met with Him, and has your life been changed since you became a Christian?
People who are engaged or married know that they are. Many men can remember the time and the place when they first asked their wives to marry them.

Can you remember the time when you came to Christ and asked Him to forgive your sins and save you ?

"I need to do something..."

A rich young man once came to Jesus to ask what he had to do to inherit eternal life. Like him some people today think that there something they must do (or pay) to 'earn' or 'deserve' eternal life. But the Bible makes it clear that eternal life is God’s free gift to us.

Imagine a small child wanting to buy very expensive car, he has some money and wants to buy the car, but his few pennies do not come anywhere near the value of the car.

Similarly whoever we are and whatever we do simply cannot pay the price for our salvation. We cannot earn our way to heaven. Trusting in our own efforts is a false ticket.

Jesus has paid the price for us, we receive God’s free gift. Simple faith is the outstretched hand by which we receive God’s free and infinite gift.

"I will live forever..."

A thief on the cross next to Christ was mocking Jesus and living as if he would never die. He ignored the fact that he would soon have to stand before God in the judgement that follows death. Many live their lives in the same way. Are you living as if you will live for ever, with never a thought of God and the judgement day to come?

"Tomorrow..."

The Roman ruler Felix once requested to hear the message of the Gospel. He said that it was interesting, but he would think about it another time.
We all know about eternity but its easy to put off thinking about it. Its foolish to plan to think about God tomorrow or 'just' before you die, as 'tomorrow' never comes.

There was a second thief on a cross next to Jesus, he realised his sin, he turned to Christ and asked for forgiveness. Christ told him, he was forgiven and that when he died he would be in heaven with Christ. He had a real ticket for heaven from Christ Himself.
Have you got a ticket which will get you into heaven when you die?
This ticket is FREE, it is paid for and given by Christ.
Don't be content with a false ticket - get a real one.
You can get the ticket the same way that the thief did: by admitting your sin, turning to Christ by faith and asking Him to forgive you. If you have never done this do it today.
