Then were there brought unto Him little children, that He should put His hands on them and pray. (Matthew 19:13)
King Ahasuerus was king over all Persia. He had a feast for all the important people. It lasted seven days and only the best things were used. The king's wife Queen Vasti had her own feast for the women in the palace. On the last day the king ordered her to come to he feast and be shown off in front of all his guests but she refused to come.
Ahasuerus was so furious that he divorced her and ordered a competition to find a new queen.
In a place called Shushan there was a Jew called Mordecai. He was a captive from Israel and he looked after his cousin Esther who had no parents. Esther was taken to the palace with other young women from the village and she was chosen to be the new queen. Mordecai told Esther not to tell the king that she was a Jew.
Mordecai sat outside the palace so he was near to Esther. Whilst he was there he overheard a plot to kill the king. He told Esther and she told the king. The plotters were arrested.
At that time the king promoted a man called Haman. He was a proud man and expected everyone to down down to him as he passed by the palace. Mordecai would not. This made Haman angry and he set out to destroy Mordecai. Haman found out that Mordecai was a Jew. He told the king that there were people in their country that did not follow the king's rules. Haman made a new law that said that on a certain day all the Jews were to be killed.
When Mordecai heard the news he tore his clothes and cried. He sent a copy of the new law to Esther and asked her to go to the king and plead for their lives. However no one could go and see the king unless he asked for them. If they went uninvited it meant death. Esther said she would go and see the king. "If I perish, I perish!" said Esther. They both prayed to God about the situation.
