David
The Philistine army were at war with the Israelites. The Philistines sent out their champion, Goliath to challenge the Israelites, he was about 10 feet tall and the Israelites were terrified of him. Goliath called out to the Israelites.
David went out to meet Goliath with only his staff and his sling. He picked up five stones from the brook and put them in his Shepherds bag.
Goliath laughed "Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?" David said "You come at me with sword, a spear and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the God of Israel." Goliath came down to attack David, David got out one of the stones from his bag and put it in the sling. He struck Goliath on the forehead, Goliath came crashing down, David ran across and pulled Goliath's sword out and killed him with it. The Israelite army cheered and chased the Philistines as they fled. With God on your side you can do great things.
King Saul offered riches and the hand of his daughter in marriage to any one who would fight Goliath.
David was a shepherd boy. He was sent by his father Jesse to the battle to see how his elder brothers were.
Whilst he was greeting his brothers, Goliath came out and shouted his challenge. David could not believe how the soldiers would let Goliath defy their God. The soldiers took David to King Saul and told him that David was willing to fight. "How can you go up against Goliath you are just a youth." said the king. David told Saul how he had protected his father's sheep from bears and lions and that the Lord would deliver him from the Philistines. Saul agreed to let David Fight Goliath and gave him his armour but it was so heavy he couldn't walk in it, so David took it off.
