My name is Les Cain, and I am a born & bred scouser. My earliest childhood memories
were living in the slums in Mill Road, Everton and then moving up to Huyton when
I was 9 years old. I also remember thinking that Huyton was in the countryside. I'd
never seen gardens and trees before!
My family were not church goers, and I was never taught to say my prayers or read
the bible. Yet I know that my parents taught me to respect those who did believe
in God & to show respect to others and their property.
I attended Huyton Modern Secondary School. I left the school in the mid 60's aged
15 and started work at the B.I.C.C. cable works in Prescot as a process worker. I
could have had an apprenticeship in the company, but I wanted to go to sea and see
the world, but for a number of reasons this never happened.
By the time I reached my mid-twenties I had a job as a welder, a girlfriend, good
health, and money in my pocket. Everything outwardly was fine, but inwardly I had
this feeling of emptiness & dissatisfaction with my life. I wondered if there was
something more to Life than what I was experiencing. I did believe that there was
a God, but didn't see what believing in God had to do with my everyday life.
Then one Easter, I watched two films on TV about the Life of Christ. Watching these
films caused me to ask questions about Jesus for the first time, why did he die,
and what has it got to do with me? For the first time in my life I began to attend
church (Dovecot). Over the next weeks I heard the word of God preached and listened
to different Christians who told me how Jesus had transformed their lives.
I knew that what these people had was what I wanted. The turning point came for me
when I came to understand that Jesus came into this world to save sinners (1Timothy
1 v 15) which means that when he was nailed to the cross, that he took those nails
for me and when he died, that he died for me. The Bible teaches that the death of
the Lord Jesus Christ is the only atonement (payment for sin) that God accepts. I
asked Jesus to forgive my sins and come into my heart and be my saviour. He did that
32 years ago.
My life has been changed by the Lord, I now have peace with God,(Romans 5 v1) and
I have the joy of knowing that my sins are forgiven (Romans 5v11) with the promise
also of a home in Heaven (1Peter1v4). All this and much more comes to us by the Amazing
Grace of God.
One question to the reader............What about you???
