Hi my name is Sue. I have been attending Dovecot Evangelical Church since I was 12 years old. How did I come to start attending this church? It was through the change I had experienced in my Dad, who had started attending Dovecot about a year before me. Each week he would ask my Mum to go along with him, and eventually when she said she would, I decided to go with her.
Although I had attended a Sunday School for a number of years as a child, I didn’t really understand what it truly meant to be a Christian. I firmly believed that I was going to go to heaven when I died. I didn’t realise that I needed to have a personal relationship with God and to accept the Lord Jesus Christ in to my life.
Through attending Dovecot and listening to the messages each week, gradually I began to realise that I wasn’t entitled to enter heaven based on being a good person or attending church. I heard and understood that as a result of my sin I was separated from God and this would keep me out of heaven. I had always thought a ‘sinner’ was somebody who had committed bad crimes such as murder, or had stolen etc. But God doesn’t judge sin the same way as us. He doesn’t have good and bad, or little and big sins. All wrong doing carries the same penalty by Gods standards – separation from Him.
Having finally understood this I knew that I wanted to go to heaven and the only way I could obtain this was to ask for God’s forgiveness; ask Him to come into my life and help me live a life that would be pleasing to Him.
I can now say with assurance that I have been promised eternal life with God through what the Lord Jesus did when He died on the cross taking my punishment upon himself.
