My name is Steve Taylor and I have been coming to Dovecot Evangelical Church for about 30 years.
I was born on the Dovecot Estate (Adcote Road) in the mid 1950's and went to the local primary and junior schools in Dovecot.
In the late 1960's following the death of my father we moved out of the area to Liverpool 15 (Wavertree) and I attended the local comprehensive school. It was there at the age of 16 that I met Christians and heard the message of the Bible for myself. Through a friend I heard the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ: that out of love for men and women God had sent Jesus Christ His Son into the world to be our Saviour, and that a person could come to know God in a personal way through simple faith in Jesus Christ who was alive today.
Until that time I would not have called myself a Christian and was certainly not living like one. I had done much wrong but after hearing the Gospel message I wanted to believe it for myself. A verse from the Bible (Jesus Christ speaking) helped me at this point:
'Behold I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him and will sup with him, and he with Me.' Revelation 3:20
I knew that Christ was outside of my life, and I wanted to open the door of my life and let Him in, so I said a short prayer admitting my sin to God and saying sorry for the wrong things I had done. I asked God to forgive me and for the Lord Jesus Christ to come into my life as my personal Saviour. The change for me was immediate. I knew straightaway that God had heard my prayer and that the Lord Jesus Christ had come into my life by His Spirit as the Bible promised. I stopped doing the things I knew were wrong. I began to read the Bible and to attend Church, not because I had to but because I wanted to, and I wanted to be with others who had had the same experience and to hear the Bible explained. Eventually I came to understand that when Jesus died on the cross He had given His life for sinners like me. Because He is the Son of God He had risen again from the dead and now offers eternal life to all those who believe. From that time to this I have been conscious of God's daily presence in my life and am very thankful for God for all His goodness and patience with me.
